KIMBERLY GALES EMERGING ARTIST SCHOLARSHIP

about the scholarship...current winners...previous winners...how to apply

The scholarship was established to honor Kimberly Gales, 1948-2005, an accomplished watercolorist, successful businesswoman and mother, Portland Open Studios artist and board member. Kim’s broadly creative spirit was evident in all aspects of her life. She brought wisdom, common sense, good humor and unfailing dedication to her role as a Portland Open Studios board member. We are pleased to be able to establish a scholarship in her name.

Artists between the ages of 20 and 30 are eligible to apply for the scholarship to participate in Portland Open Studios. Applicants are screened with all other applying artists. A final selection is made from the artists who had been accepted into the tour.

We were able to offer two scholarships to young artists in 2007.

Ben Heiken and Jennifer Mercede, 2007 winners

Benjamin Heiken

Benjamin Heiken’s black and white pencil portraits of ordinary people, suspended in moments of everyday life, are beautifully crafted with a quiet emotional impact that takes one by surprise. A nine month stay in Seville and travels throughout Europe gave him an unofficial art education in some of the great museums of the world. In Paris he had a short residency at Shakespeare and Company, the legendary Paris bookstore, where he ran the cash register, read the mandatory book a day, exchanged ideas with other artists, writers, and musicians in the program, and slept on a cot among the bookshelves. Beforehe moved west he studied with Thomas Metcalf,a Chicago area
painter, and attended college in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. He currently attends Portland Community College.

Jennifer Mercede

Jennifer Mercede’s large paintings are exuberant stream of conscious “doodles” that are at once intricate and simple.Large shapes are filled with layers of abstract patterns, line drawings of familiar objects, scrawled text and vivid colors which she calls mindscapes. Besides being a full time artist, Jennifer, who is as exuberant as her paintings, is an active participant in the art community. She teaches art workshops to neighborhood children, works on mural projects, and is the founding member of a women’s art marketing group. She graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham with a BA in painting and illustration. Although she has been in a few group exhibitions in galleries and alternative paces, her first solo exhibitioon was this spring at Launchpad Gallery in Southeast Portland.
