The Service Award goes to an artist who has assisted Portland Open Studios way beyond the call of duty. Jane Levy Campbell paints in watercolor with subject matter that includes botanical studies and still-lives, studies of the land and sky or the architecture between. She remarks that she enjoys playing with scale: painting a vast skyscape on a tiny page, or a detailed botanical study in a wide, multiple-panel piece.
The quality of the light dictates her rendering: she notes that she does her best to not impose a style on the subject matter.
Levy Campbell has fond memories of her childhood in Appalachia, and studied at
Phillips Exeter Academy, Princeton and Yale.
My work is inspired by nature and shaped by disciplined craft. I use transparent watercolor in compositions from 5x7” to 20’ combining meticulous botanical rendering with landscape and bold pools of saturated color. I love creating an illusion of solid form and distinct time and place from insubstantial materials.
