For a shift of perspective, we are pleased to offer Tori Abernathy a Kimberly Gales Emerging Artist Scholarship recipient. Abernathy is interested in the conceptual frame around a piece in addition to the tangible object. Integrating a curatorial practice self-described as “context hacking”, she clarifies that the art moment necessitates the perception or interaction of the viewer.
Abernathy has exhibited nationally and internationally in traditional art spaces, the taco house, on street corners and public transit. Originally from Miami, she currently studies Linguistics and Studio Art at Reed College, co-coordinates the annual arts festival RAW in Portland, and works as an artist mentor at Project Grow. Abernathy also founded and curates RECESS Gallery, currently hosted at her studio.
