The application to the 2012 Portland Open Studios Tour will open January 15, 2012. Application deadline is March 15. If you would like to be notified when we have opened the application, please submit your information below.
The annual Tour is a unique opportunity for you to open your studio to the public and educate visitors about your creative methods and materials, inspiration and enjoyment. As a member, you will meet other artists, have access to publicity and dialogue, and possibly sell your work.
Open to all visual media except film. Artists are chosen by an independent jury of three art professionals. The 2011 Jury were Elise Wagner, Mark Woolley, and Modou Dieng.
Scholarships are available to artists 30 or younger.
The participation fee is $150 plus 8 hours of volunteer service. Artists who opt out of volunteering pay an additional $175. There is a separate non-refundable jury fee of $25 for early application before March 8. The jury fee is $35 from the 8th to the 15th.
Eligibility
Your studio must be in Portland, Milwaukie, Oak Grove, Gladstone, Happy Valley, Tigard, Tualatin, Beaverton, Aloha, Lake Oswego, or West Linn.
Application is by individual artist only and not by studio, agent, dealer or other representatives. Artists who share one studio space must apply separately; artists who always work on the same objects as a team may submit both names on one application. One person may not apply under multiple names. Only those artists who are juried in will be allowed to open their studios and show their work as part of the Portland Open Studios tour.
Participation Requirements
Portland Open Studios is a not-for-profit organization with an educational mission. This means that the Tour is focused on you sharing with the public the realities of your creative working life. As such, we require you to be actively demonstrating your working methods and willing to answer questions about your process and materials at the location listed in the Tour Guide on all four days of the Tour.
The sale of your work is hoped for and encouraged, but should be considered incidental. Portland Open Studios does not ask for a commission on any sales.
We are a predominantly volunteer-powered organization, including all Board positions. We require you to help out by volunteering at least 8 hours of your time. If you are unable to provide volunteer hours, you must pay the Opt-out Fee of $175. Check out the options on the Volunteer Job Descriptions page.
You must read and sign the Liability Waiver, and abide by the Code of Conduct included in the application.
Attendance at both Training Workshops is essential but not mandatory:
1. At the First Workshop, in May, you will proof-read all your contact information in the Tour Guide and Map. This is your one and only chance to do so!
2. At the Second Workshop, in July, you will receive your street signs, complimentary Tour Guides and promotional information. In addition, you will meet the Jury, receive advice on demonstrating and other tips on how to have the most successful event possible.
Failure to meet these requirements will jeopardize future participation in Portland Open Studios.
